⚖️Importance of balancing customer needs with business goals.⚖️

As a mentor and advisor I often hear that this is a challenge for many product minded people.

Let me give you a real life example of negotiating with my kid on what we will have for dinner.

As a “customer” my kid was very clear on what he wanted. If we only listened to his “customer needs”, we would eat pancakes every evening. 🥞

However, as parents we have “long term business goals” of healthy and diversified nutrition for the family. 🍎

So we found a way to balance them: one evening we went for a balanced meal, but the next evening we were short on time and accepted pancakes as a solution.

How do you navigate the fine line between meeting user needs and driving business growth as a product manager? Let's dive into strategies for the right balance:

📝Deep dive into user insights to understand the problem: Understanding users is paramount. Achieve this through user research, feedback loops, and data analytics.

🎯Aligning with business goals: Get clarity on what are business goals and specifically which business objective you contribute to.

✅ Define what problem you solve: based on customer needs with the constraints of business goals. Make sure the solution you implement solves the problem.

🗣️ Continuous feedback Loop: Maintain a continuous feedback loop, gathering insights from users, measuring key metrics, and iterating accordingly. It's a cycle of improvement driven by empathy and data.

In the end, the art of product management lies in harmonising seemingly conflicting forces: user needs and business objectives.

It's about finding creative solutions that deliver value to both customers and the bottom line. By striking this balance, you can pave the way for sustainable growth and meaningful impact.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! How do you approach the delicate balance between user-centricity and business goals in your product management journey? 🗣️
